Common Questions About Therapy
Discover answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about therapy and how it can benefit you.
What is trauma informed therapy?
Trauma informed therapy recognizes that many emotional patterns and coping strategies develop as responses to difficult experiences. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, this approach helps individuals understand the deeper patterns shaping their thoughts, emotions and relationships while building healthier ways of coping and relating.
What should I expect during my first session?
Your first session is an opportunity to talk about what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain from the process. The therapist will ask questions about your experiences, background and current challenges while helping you feel comfortable and supported. It is also a chance to ask questions and determine if the therapeutic relationship feels like a good fit.
How long does therapy typically last?
The length of therapy varies depending on each person’s goals and situation. Some individuals benefit from short term support during a specific life transition, while others choose longer term therapy to explore deeper emotional patterns and personal growth.
Can therapy help with cultural identity issues?
Yes. Therapy can be a helpful space to explore questions of identity, cultural expectations and generational patterns. Vidya Nair brings particular experience supporting South Asian teens and young adults navigating cross cultural pressures and identity development.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Therapy sessions are confidential and protected by professional and legal privacy standards. Information shared in therapy is not disclosed without your permission except in specific circumstances required by law, such as concerns about safety.
